Zotero Highlight Collector is a free tool that turns your PDF highlights into an organized research dataset. When you highlight text in research papers using different colors, the plugin automatically collects those highlights along with information about which paper they came from, the page number, and any translations you've added. You can then view all your highlights in one panel, organize them by assigning meanings to colors (like 'Vocabulary' or 'Core Claim'), filter to see only certain types of highlights, and export everything as a spreadsheet or as flashcards for studying. Everything stays stored on your own computer—nothing is sent to the internet.
How It Works
You download the file from GitHub and add it to Zotero's tools, like installing any other extension.
As you read through research papers, you highlight important passages using different colors.
The plugin quietly notices your colored highlights and saves them with their source information—no extra clicks needed.
From the Tools menu, you open a panel that shows all your captured highlights organized in one place.
You decide that gray means vocabulary, yellow means key claims, and blue means quotes worth remembering.
You click to see only your vocabulary highlights, or only your methodology notes.
You save everything as a spreadsheet to share with colleagues, or as flashcards to study with Anki.
You now have a searchable collection of every important passage you've marked, ready for writing papers, studying, or sharing.
